Pic(k) of the Week: Light as storm passes

Light as storm passes
i am afraid of what happens
when it stops storming this way round
when the clouds have blown,
and all that is left are me and my prayers for rain.
i'm trying to enjoy the thunder while it lasts,
but it's hard not to miss a storm before it leaves.

Poem seen in Georgia Poetry in the Parks. Sunset seen after a violent storm in Decatur, Georgia, USA, 12 January 2023.

  • Only part of Mr. Jones' poem was excerpted above. This is the full thing:

my son was born the way all storms are:
    gathered from nothing and everything all at once;
the spark between his mother and i
distilled into his thunderous voice, announcing
to the world that this is his home now,
and prepare to move or be moved.

in november, the leaves may die, but my love will not.

my son is amost two now and grows
the way all storms do: without shame or worry,
eager for all of the knowledge this world
can afford them, full of expectation, and hungry
for the unexpected. may this storm never stop
growing. may my son flood this earth
with broken smiles and boundless joy, and
may the earth be grateful for his blessings.

in november, the leaves may die, but my love will not.

i am afraid of what happens
when it stops storming this way round
    when the clouds have blown,
and all that is left are me and my prayers for rain.
i'm trying to enjoy the thunder while it lasts,
but it's hard not to miss a storm before it leaves.

in november, the leaves may die, but my love will not.

  • "The concept of Georgia Poetry in the Parks came about in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, when many Georgian families began exploring the outdoors to relieve the frustrations of virtual schooling and working from home. Georgia Poetry in the Parks places poems by contemporary Georgia writers along park trails to encourage individuals and families exploring Georgia’s green spaces to stop and reflect on their environment and the power of language. Many of the stops on the poetry trails include creative prompts for people interested in writing poems or narratives of their own. At various points in the year, the poetry trails will be supplemented by readings and workshops, some to be held virtually and some outdoors, in COVID-safe spaces."

  • Pic(k) of the Week: one in a weekly series of images posted on Saturdays, occasionally, but not always (as is the case today), with a good fermentable as the subject.
