Pic(k) of the Week: Feed the Ducks

Feed the ducks

Come feed the little birds,
Show them you care.
And you'll be glad if you do.
Their young ones are hungry
Their nests are so bare.
All it takes is tuppence from you.
Feed the birds, tuppence a bag,
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.

The birds in the water are a mother mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and her ducklings. On land, the larger, braver bird (feeding to the right) is a Moscovy duck (Cairina moschata), native to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. Small wild breeding populations have established themselves in the United States.

The photo is unposed. None of the participants knew they were being photographed.

  • The lyrics are Feed the Birds from the 1964 Disney film, Mary Poppins. The music I've embedded is Someday My Prince Will Come, also a Disney song, but from a 1937 animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Here the tune is gorgeously re-worked by trumpeter/bandleader Miles Davis and his sextet (album released in 1961):
    • Miles Davis: trumpet
    • Hank Mobley, John Coltrane: tenor saxophones
    • Wynton Kelly: piano
    • Paul Chambers: bass
    • Jimmy Cobb: drums
The lovely lady on the album cover was Davis' first wife, dancer Frances Taylor Davis (who, in 1951, was the first African-American to dance with the Paris Opera Ballet).
